'I was once feeling hopeless in life but now I want to help others'

A Northern Ireland man who found himself at rock bottom in life, is now helping other young people who find themselves feeling lonely or hopeless.

The 24-year-old, from Co Down , now volunteers with Extern’s Youth Engagement Service (YES). It offers flexible, tailored support to young people aged 11–25 across Northern Ireland who may be struggling with challenges such as poor mental health, disengagement from school or training, risk-taking behaviours, or family difficulties.

Delivered through local hubs and community outreach, YES provides a safe and supportive space where young people can access one-to-one mentoring, practical advice, and help to build the skills and confidence they need to take positive steps forward. Whether it’s support with education, employment, or simply someone to talk to, YES says it is there to help young people feel heard, valued, and connected.

Speaking to Belfast Live about his path, the young man said: "I started my journey with Extern through getting my own support from their team. For me, there wasn't two or three issues that I was dealing with, there were a lot. Drugs and alcohol, antisocial behaviour and crime.

"I was having family issues and was always finding myself in trouble. It was coming to our last sessions and I was asked what my plans were for after, and I told my one-to-one that I wanted to help others. I knew I could see myself in that kind of volunteering role.

"He was able to help me get started on that path of volunteering with Extern. After one day, I really enjoyed it, and it felt like it was the start of something for me. I didn't want to give up.

"The support that I got when I was at that low point, was really great, and I wanted to be that support to other young people. Through my role as a volunteer, I could see the positive impact I was having on the young people, and that was something I didn't have when I was younger. After a few weeks, I had a sense of belonging, and a real sense of purpose."

Having now secured a permanent job, while continuing to volunteer each month with Extern, the 24-year-old has praised the Extern team and community, for the support it has given him, and for believing in him.

"Without Extern, my life would be massively different," he added.

"I was told by people close to me that I would be in jail by the time I would turn 21. And I was volunteering with Extern at that age. That is a massive pinch me moment. I was told I wouldn't be anything, but because of the help and support I received, my life took a 180.

"I know what is it like to feel low, to feel hopeless. I gave myself no chances when I was young, I thought I was just a young lad from the estate who wouldn't get further than the edge of the estate. I have had some great opportunities, and I my experiences are my strongest power.

"If anyone reading my story is afraid of reaching out for support, I was there too. I had massive fears of reaching out, but there are people there for you, and they won't judge you at all. They really are there to help you live the life that you want to live."
