A PETITION pleading for a much-loved nursery to be saved from closure has passed 500 signatures ahead of a crunch meeting with the department for education.
Devastated parents at the Shoebury Nursery, in Delaware Road, have been told the business could close on July 18 following a consultation and fear they will be left without childcare if the closure goes ahead.
Since the announcement in May, parents have been campaigning for the nursery to stay open and on Thursday night Labour Southend East and Rochford MP Bayo Alaba met with nursery bosses from the Early Years Alliance.
The MP has now arranged a meeting between the Early Years Alliance and Stephen Morgan MP from the Department of Education and is hoping for a positive outcome.
Mr Alaba said: “This is an incredibly worrying time for families.
“I appreciate the tough situation the nursery have found themselves in and am doing whatever I can to help alleviate some of the uncertainty.”
Mr Bayo Alaba met with the Early Years Alliance, who will soon also be meeting with Mr Morgan, to discuss the future of the nursery.
He said: “I have made a number of enquiries and I am setting up a meeting with the local authority to discuss the support that we can provide at this time.”
James Moyies, Conservative councillor for West Shoebury ward, said: “We have struggling businesses where increasing costs have made them unviable, which has tipped the nursery over the edge.
“The council will look into it, and I call for the council to help coordinate families to new nurseries where places are available, although financial support will not be possible.
The Early Years Alliance has stated it is “keenly aware” of the difficulties facing both families who have been left in the dark and the long term, dedicated staff at the nursery.
A spokesperson said “We fully recognise the value and contribution that Shoebury Nursery brings to the community.
“At present, the consultation is still ongoing and no final decision has been made.”
They insist they are doing their best to engage constructively with both the council and Mr Alaba to discuss all possible options in terms of the future of the nursery.
