Severance Creator Reveals the Real-Life Stories Behind Its Hit Show

Severance Dan Erickson, the creator of the popular Apple TV+ series, has disclosed the genuine source of inspiration for his show.

The second season of the bizarre psychological thriller came to an end. A few weeks back, and fans are already eagerly anticipating what will unfold in season three, which it still lacks a release date .

Even though viewers may develop their own ideas about what’s truly happening in the series, Erickson has revealed the inspiration that led him to create the highly acclaimed drama.

Appearing on a live installment of the Soundtracking with Edith Bowman In the podcast, the 41-year-old stated: "I went through something that I believe is quite unique to my own journey. You see, I was employed at a job that I despised."

And yes, I ended up going inside. As I have mentioned several times before, it was a place for making doors. My task involved sitting in a small office documenting various components like hinges, deadbolts, and other parts related to doors.

Erickson mentioned, "One day, I simply walked in and realized, I don’t want to continue doing this. If I had to be there for the day, I’d rather fast-forward through the eight hours and detach instead. That’s where everything sort of stemmed from."

Erickson subsequently detailed how he broadened the concept with assistance from Ben Stiller, who serves as an executive producer on the series and has helmed most of the episodes.

"As I pondered the concept, particularly after Ben joined us, we aimed to ensure that it wasn’t simply about being different individuals at our jobs compared to who we are outside of work or merely disliking our occupations," he clarified.

And what we realized is that the show largely revolves around identity and our fundamental essence as individuals. It makes us wonder if we'd still be the same people without our memories, having matured or living in an entirely different situation.

Similarly, within a corporate environment, our human qualities might be somewhat reduced, and in certain instances, we may even choose to suppress our own humanity to better adapt to this setting, along with understanding the risks associated with doing so.

Even though season three had a three-year wait, Stiller recently confirmed that fans won't have to wait so long for the upcoming season.

"No, the strategy doesn’t involve waiting for three years," he stated on Jason and Travis Kelce’s show. New Heights Hopefully, we'll share our plans very soon.
