Minot State Unveils 'Serenity Suite': A Haven for Stress Relief on Campus

MINOT, N.D. (KMOT) - The Minot State Beavers have recently added some thrilling new features to their student health center.

Recently, they bought a massage chair, a seasonal effective disorder lamp, and a sound lounge as part of something they're referring to as their "Serenity Suite."

Within the Serenity Suite lie three distinct chambers designed with a single objective: to provide students, faculty, and staff a place for relaxation.

Junior Sadie Weninger mentioned that she'll find it particularly beneficial during the extended winter season.

“That’s when my stress level is at the peak, so when I found out about it, I was like ‘Oh my gosh, I got to go check it out,’” said Weninger.

Director Debra Hammam stated that they were the pioneers in the state to acquire the bed for their sound lounge area.

"It leverages the audio feedback from the headphones along with the vibrations of the bed to stimulate bodily cells for therapeutic purposes. Additionally, it offers a relaxing experience. If desired, you can achieve complete, restful sleep using this bed," explained Haman.

Haman mentioned that there are over 300 songs available for selection.

“I know not a lot of campuses have such a wonderful outlet that we can use just like a massage chair whenever we want. And, it’s free—I think that’s the best part,” said Weninger.

The seasonal affective disorder lamp can nearly replicate the advantages provided by sunlight.

Haman mentioned that in the upcoming weeks, they will be placing additional massage chairs in more easily reachable spots around the campus.

"Our students communicate extensively with us, and we pay attention," stated Haman.

She said they were able to save a portion of their budget from student fees as a way to give back to the MSU Beavers.

Students, faculty and staff can schedule appointments online or in person.

The Serenity Suite will be accessible from Monday through Friday, with an additional open house scheduled for Thursday at 1 o'clock. It can be found near the southern entryway of Lura Manor.
