Barbie Embraces Inclusivity with New Type 1 Diabetes Doll
Barbie is evolving, and the latest addition to the iconic doll lineup reflects a commitment to representing the diverse experiences of children around the world. Mattel has unveiled a new Barbie doll designed with Type 1 diabetes, marking a significant step towards inclusivity and broader representation in the toy aisle.
"Introducing a Barbie doll with Type 1 diabetes is an important milestone in our ongoing dedication to inclusivity," stated Krista Berger, Senior Vice President of Barbie and Global Head of Dolls. "Barbie plays a crucial role in shaping children's early perceptions, and by showcasing medical conditions like Type 1 diabetes, we empower more children to see themselves reflected in the stories they create and the dolls they cherish."
To ensure the accuracy and authenticity of the doll, Mattel collaborated closely with Breakthrough T1D, a leading organization dedicated to research and advocacy for Type 1 diabetes. This partnership ensured that the doll accurately reflects the realities of living with the condition.
Type 1 diabetes is a chronic autoimmune condition where the pancreas produces little to no insulin. This necessitates insulin therapy and carries the potential for both short-term and long-term health complications.
The Barbie with Type 1 diabetes features several key elements designed in consultation with Breakthrough T1D:
-
Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM): The doll sports a CGM on her arm, a small, wearable device that continuously tracks blood sugar levels. Heart-shaped medical tape secures the CGM, adding a touch of personality. She also has a phone displaying a CGM app, reflecting how individuals with Type 1 diabetes monitor their glucose levels.
-
Insulin Pump: Attached to her waist is an insulin pump, a device that delivers automated insulin doses as needed. This reflects the vital role insulin pumps play in managing Type 1 diabetes.
-
Stylish Outfit: The doll wears a blue polka dot top and matching skirt with ruffles. The blue color and circle print are deliberate nods to the international symbols associated with diabetes awareness.
-
Practical Purse: The pastel blue purse is designed to carry essential items, such as diabetes supplies or snacks, highlighting the everyday needs of individuals managing Type 1 diabetes.
Aaron J. Kowalski, CEO of Breakthrough T1D, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration. "We were thrilled when Barbie approached us to collaborate on the development of the Barbie doll with Type 1 diabetes," he said. "Having lived with Type 1 diabetes since I was 13, and my brother since he was 3, this partnership is deeply personal. It means the world to be part of bringing greater visibility to a condition that affects so many families. It's an honor to work with a brand that shares our commitment to showing children that a life with Type 1 diabetes can be full, vibrant, and empowering."
As part of their ongoing partnership, Barbie donated dolls to the Breakthrough T1D 2025 Children's Congress in Washington, D.C.
This new doll is just one example of Barbie's continued commitment to diversity and representation. The brand has been actively expanding its offerings to include dolls modeled after prominent figures and those that celebrate different abilities and backgrounds.
Other recent examples of Barbie's commitment to inclusivity include:
- The release of a Le Bron James "Kenbassador" doll.
- The launch of an American Sign Language version of the Barbie movie on HBO Max.
- An athletic Barbie doll released earlier this year.
- A doll modeled after Cherokee leader Wilma Mankiller as part of the "Inspiring Women" series in 2023.
These additions demonstrate Barbie's dedication to reflecting the real world and empowering children to embrace their unique identities. The Type 1 diabetes doll represents a significant step in normalizing medical conditions and fostering a greater understanding and acceptance of diversity.
