A luxury Yorkshire spa loved by celebs is still as good as ever after 20 years

For 20 years, a rather special spa in Yorkshre has been loved for its splendour and its ethical core.

Firstly, let's take a step back in time, to 1911, when a wool mill was built in Linthwaite . The same year as that fateful ship RMS Titanic, and out of the same technological optimism, the mill became known locally as Titanic Mill.

For decades, it served the community providing employment until the decline of the woollen textile industry hit production and forced it to shut. In 2005, after much refurbishment and investment, the imposing building was transformed into a luxury spa - with sustainability at its heart.

  • Heartbreaking message as beloved shop closes down - but 'not forever'

From its inception, Titanic Spa, pitched as the UK’s first eco spa, has been a pioneer of environmentally-focused practices and was the first in the UK to incorporate renewable energy sources, including solar panels and a water recycling system. The team’s hard work regularly resulted in major industry awards which honour its commendable efforts alongside praising the services the attraction provides.

The 20th anniversary of Titanic Spa has seen demand for spa days and overnight breaks being very high. It is very pleasing to report their towering standards, as lofty in height as the West Yorkshire spa building, remain firmly in place.

It is understandable why Titanic Spa has regularly been a firm favourite with Coronation Street faves Jack P Shepherd, Samia Longchambon, Jane Danson, Tina O’Brien and Denise Welch - the latter hiding at the spa during an episode of Celebrity Hunted . The spa has also occupied social media posts of reality TV stars with Gemma Collins et al paying Titanic visits in recent years. Should a bit of possible star-spotting float your boat.

The very applaudable, aforementioned ethos do not result in any reduction of luxury for those after a much-deserved pamper experience. You’ll be hard pressed to find a spa in the region, or quite possibly even the country, with as many facilities at your disposal.

So, take a deep breath, as the Linthwaite destination boasts an indoor heated salt regulated swimming pool, sauna and steam room, relaxation lounge, outdoor hot tub, rasul chamber and, arguably its highlight, the heat and ice experience area. Providing a relaxing sensory journey to guests who can enjoy a herbal infusion room, aromatherapy room, crystal steam bath, sauna cabin, foot baths, ice room and plunge pool.

After experiencing all that, you might want to have a quick bite to eat and reflect on the lavish fun you’ve enjoyed. The Titanic Spa Bistro serves brunch, lunch, afternoon tea and evening meals. All rather impressively operating from a somewhat compact unit, accompanying the dining area, which houses a resourceful brigade.

During my recent visit, lunch menu highlights included marinara chicken tagliatelle, chorizo Spanish omelette, sandwich selections and salads. While in the evening, mains included roast chicken, roast pork belly and vegetable tagine among mouth-watering options to feast on.

During Titanic Spa’s 20th year, there have been many packages and initiatives announced by the welcoming team. As part of their summer offering, there’s a ‘sunset spa nights’ option inviting guests to unwind to the upbeat, yet relaxing, soundtrack while enjoying exclusive access to the spa’s al fresco terrace and outdoor sunken hot tub to lounge beneath the stars.

While the eco-conscious venue has seen the addition of the Titanic Spa Bee Palace - located on the spa’s terrace. It was created to provide a safe and nurturing habitat for solitary bees and other insects - playing a vital role in biodiversity and pollination.

Back inside, of course, while visiting a spa of such quality, it would be remiss to not treat yourself to one of the very many wonderful-indulgent treatment options delivered by the skilled therapists on-site. Options include facials, massages, scrubs, hand and foot focused treatments alongside alternative therapies.

Having experienced my first stone massage just last year, I have developed something of a taste for it. So, I was delighted to discover it being an option at Titanic Spa. The member of the team, overseeing the treatment, insightfully explained the wellbeing benefits.

The massage saw Balinese stones bathed in the Frangipani Monoi Body Oil used to focus in areas of muscle tension. Feeling so at peace afterwards, I spent some time just being at one, allowing the minutes to drift by before heading up to my accommodation on-site.

For some, after packing so much in (in a tranquil manner), it would probably feel a fitting time to head home in a refreshed state of zen. Although, on my Titanic visit, I was extremely fortunate to enjoy a first overnight stay at the converted mill.

For quite a while, I’ve wanted to peek inside one of Titanic’s 33 deluxe apartments and it was a pleasure to savour. Ours was positioned on the corner of the building boasting wonderful views of the picturesque surroundings.

Out on the large balcony being an ideal spot to pose, in my case somewhat ridiculously, for a perfect Insta shot. I can only apologise for the robed snaps of me…let's just say I got lost in the moment.

Inside, our apartment was set across two floors with two bedrooms featuring mammoth double bed which provided such splendid sunken slumber. The dreams were always going to be sweet in such a huge bed.

Elsewhere, the spacious accommodation featured a full kitchen set up as well as some nice continental breakfast touches from hosts Titanic.

But before retiring for the evening and even entertaining the idea of my first meal of the day, I was privileged to enjoy another Titanic first, stepping foot through the doors of Bar1911 - hidden behind the treatment rooms. Having, on previous visits, left before its opening (daily from 6pm) I sampled my maiden tipple in the stylish drinks setting which has a thorough mix of cocktails for you to work through at your leisure.

An idyllic spot to raise a glass to Titanic Spa’s major milestone. Two decades in, Titanic Spa is still at the top of its game. Cheers! Here’s to the next 20 years.
