BOSTON -- The Red Sox have demonstrated their ability to adapt their roster throughout the entire season. They will need to make even more adjustments now that rookie infielder Marcelo Mayer has been placed on the injured list due to an injury in his right wrist.
Mayer, who hurt the same wrist in the minor leagues back in 2022, didn't share many details about the injury's specifics or how bad it was. However, he did express his disappointment with the timing, given their playoff aspirations in the latter half of the season.
This is a tough situation," Mayer commented at Fenway Park. "Clearly, this isn't where I want to be. My goal is to be on the field every game, contributing to the team's success. As athletes, our primary desire is to compete and showcase our abilities. It's incredibly disheartening.
Mayer admitted it was "super annoying" that he's had an injured list period in every season of his professional career. He's still expected to be important as the season winds down, but the Red Sox need to adjust their plans while he's out.
Mayer's ability to play multiple infield positions proved valuable for Boston this year, especially at third and second. To make room, David Hamilton was recalled to the majors. The Red Sox also plan to utilize Romy Gonzalez and Abraham Toro more frequently in platoon roles, expecting them to contribute from different positions.
Ceddanne Rafaela, who's been on a tear this July, might get more opportunities to play in the infield now that Jarren Duran is proving to be a reliable center fielder.
Mayer earned his MLBHe was summoned to the majors in late May, and in his initial 44 games, he batted .228, slugging four homers and posting a .674 OPS.
With the trade deadline looming next week and the Red Sox facing several areas of concern, the way the team adjusts its batting order to compensate for yet another player being out will be closely watched.
