Several teams, including the Mets, have expressed interest in.Sandy Alcantara, reports Mike Puma, a writer for The New York Post.. It appeared they were still a long way from acquiring the ex-Cy Young Award recipient. Deals within the same division involving players with team control are difficult to execute, and the Mets were said to be prioritizing bullpen reinforcements over starting pitching.
New York has already madeThis afternoon's first move to bolster the bullpen is here. To acquire a left-handed pitcher with a powerful arm from the Orioles, they traded two pitching prospects.Gregory Soto. In addition to looking for bullpen help, they are also considering options for starting pitchers and center fielders.
Across 20 starts, Alcantara's ERA stands at 6.66. His strikeout rate of 16.7%, a career worst, is significantly subpar. This season, Alcantara has induced far fewer swings and chases compared to previous years. Despite these worrying patterns, teams might find him appealing as a player who could benefit from a fresh start. Alcantara's average fastball velocity of 97.6 mph has returned to pre-Tommy John surgery levels from 2023. He has a contract with Miami for $17 million this year and the next, and a guaranteed $2 million buyout on a $21 million club option for 2027.
This week, baseball operations president David Stearns hinted that the Mets could be content with a playoff pitching lineup consisting of a mix ofKodai Senga, Sean Manaea, David Peterson, Clay Holmes and Frankie Montas. Holmes is already handling a peak amount of work in his first complete MLB season as a starting pitcher. After a dominant first three months, he's had difficulties in July. Senga, Manaea, and Montas have all been plagued by injuries this season. The Mets might also acquireTylor MegillHe's expected to return next month, but his recovery from an elbow sprain makes his availability uncertain.
Stearns also suggested the Mets might be satisfied with the pairing ofJeff McNeil and Tyrone Taylorin the outfield. However, they only have a limited presence in that sector. The Post’s Jon Heymanhints that they remain keen on a long-speculated acquisition target.Luis Robert Jr. Earlier this week, SNY’s Andy Martino called Baltimore’s Cedric Mullins a “consideration.”
Mullins, about to become a free agent, is a sure bet to be traded, but his hitting has been poor since April. Robert, with team options of $20 million each for 2026 and 2027, struggled offensively for the first few months but has improved recently. Robert's strengths include hitting lefties effectively, playing excellent defense, and stealing bases, making him the more attractive trade option of the two.
