Worcester Gears Up for Futures League All-Star Extravaganza
The city of Worcester is set to become a hub for collegiate summer baseball as it hosts the Futures Collegiate Baseball League's Home Run Derby and All-Star Game. These premier midseason events are scheduled for July 21st and 22nd, promising an exciting weekend for baseball fans.
"We're really excited about it," says a key figure involved in organizing the event. "I think it's going to be awesome for the city of Worcester." The event is expected to provide a boost to local businesses, particularly restaurants and hotels, during the summer months. Furthermore, it offers a fantastic opportunity to showcase the talent within the league to the Worcester community. The league boasts exceptional ballplayers from across the nation.
Home Run Derby Details
The Home Run Derby will kick off the festivities at 6:30 p.m. on July 21st at Fitton Field. Adding to the excitement, a fireworks display will follow the derby. For those looking to enjoy some craft brews, a beer festival will be held in the left field tent, starting at 5 p.m.
One player to watch is first baseman Jackson Marshall, who, as of July 8th, led the league with seven home runs and is the reigning Home Run Derby champion. Marshall, a 6-foot-8, 260-pound athlete, transferred to the University of Connecticut after a successful freshman season at Southern New Hampshire University.
Organizers anticipate Marshall will have the chance to defend his title. They jokingly remarked on Marshall's power, suggesting that drivers on Interstate 290 should be cautious during the derby, referencing a previous instance where he hit a ball in that direction during a game.
All-Star Game Schedule and Special Guests
The All-Star Game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on July 22nd at Polar Park. Before the main event, a seven-inning American Legion game will be played at 4 p.m., featuring Shrewsbury Post 397, managed by a prominent figure in the Bravehearts organization, against an opponent to be announced. This game celebrates the 100th anniversary of Legion Baseball. July 23rd is reserved as a rain date.
Adding star power to the event, Todd Angilly, known for singing the national anthem at Boston Bruins home games, will perform the anthem at Polar Park. Former Red Sox outfielder and World Series champion Johnny Damon will throw out the first pitch. Worcester native and Boston Red Sox Hall of Famer Rich Gedman will also be among the honored guests.
A pregame ceremony recognizing Gedman is being planned. Gedman's son, Matt Gedman, is the manager of the New Britain Bees in the Futures League, making his presence at the event even more fitting.
Team Representation and Past Hosting Experience
The All-Star Game rosters are expected to be announced soon. It is anticipated that the Bravehearts will have strong representation, given their first-place standing in the league with a 24-10 record as of July 8th.
The Bravehearts have previously hosted all-star festivities in 2016, demonstrating their experience in organizing successful events.
Partnership and Future Plans
A significant development occurred earlier this year when the Bravehearts were acquired and a partnership with the WooSox, the Triple-A minor league affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, was announced.
This collaboration led to the announcement that the 2025 Futures League All-Star Game would be held at Polar Park. This decision reflects the intention to foster a strong working relationship between the organizations, a vision that was shared by key figures involved in both teams. The event at Polar Park signifies the culmination of these efforts and a commitment to the city of Worcester.
