According to acquired messages, Tahj Ra-El, previously a safety for Memphis, shared the playbook with UTSA quarterback Owen McCown prior to the November 2 game between UTSA and Memphis.On3 Sports Sam Shoemaker on Friday.
Ra-El sent a collection of photos, including one text to McCown that read, "Here you go tho That's all the signals." McCown responded with four crying emojis. The former safety then elaborated on the photos, saying, "The far left shows coverages. I'll send you a clearer list showing the call. But they run [quarters] and none of their safeties can cover [by the way]. There are no reroutes on the slot, and the field safety is the defense's weakest point."
McCown replied, "That's a bet, but let me know if they end up cutting your material. I can try to say something on your behalf." It remains uncertain what McCown was responding to.
Ra-El, currently at Purdue, was kicked off the team in October before the game for undisclosed reasons, potentially motivating him to seek revenge against his old teammates. He was the second-string safety behind Kourtlan Marsh, who is described as the team's "weak link" in the text messages. Ra-El and McCown knew each other before, having played together for two years at Myers Park High School in North Carolina before McCown moved to Rusk High School in east Texas.
During The American Athletic Conference's media days., UTSA's head coach, Jeff Traylor, claimed he was unaware of the text message exchange until it was reported publicly.
I initially learned about it a week prior and promptly contacted Owen," Traylor stated to the press. "Being in the quarterback room daily, we were completely unaware of any of this. Consequently, I phoned Owen to inquire about the situation, and he explained that the person he was in contact with was a former high school teammate who had reached out to him unexpectedly. He mentioned that the materials they sent him were nonsensical, so he didn't share them with me, as they had no relevance to the game. He kept it to himself. Owen is a wonderful young man who was simply being kind to a friend. In my view, the situation has been exaggerated.
McCown followed by releasing his own declaration.
McCown stated to the press, "To begin with, I never requested any information of that nature." He continued, "My emoji response shows how taken aback I was by the events. However, as the coach mentioned, it was entirely beside the point and doesn't align with our weekly preparation approach."
McCown quarterbacked the Roadrunners in 13 games the previous season, guiding them to a 7-6 record overall and a 4-4 mark in conference play. This culminated in a 44-15 triumph against Coastal Carolina in the Myrtle Beach Bowl. His father, Josh McCown, had a lengthy 18-year NFL career as a quarterback, playing for nine different teams after his time at SMU and Sam Houston. He currently coaches quarterbacks for the Minnesota Vikings.
