Finally, Shemar Stewart, the ex-Texas A&M Aggies defensive lineman, has ended his standoff.
Stewart, who was the 17th player chosen in the NFL Draft this past April, has officially signed his first professional contract.with the Cincinnati BengalsAccording to ESPN's Adam Schefter on Friday night, the player has agreed to a four-year deal, fully guaranteed, valued at $18.97 million overall, with a signing bonus of $10.4 million.
Stewart remains the final first-round selection to agree to his rookie contract, and is also the penultimate player from the entire draft to sign. Quinshon Judkins, a running back from Ohio State chosen 36th overall by the Cleveland Browns, who was recently arrested for domestic violence, is now the only player from the 2025 draft who hasn't signed.
Shemar Stewart and the Bengals Come to Terms on Contract Issue.
For several months, Stewart and the Bengals disagreed about the wording of his contract. He specifically objected to the way his signing bonus would be paid out and the standard terms related to specific guarantees, but the team wouldn't compromise at all. Some people even thought he mightConsider going back to school....and join the military draft the following year to escape the predicament.
Recently, Bengals owner Mike Brown criticized Stewart.begged him to end his refusal to play and asked him to come in right away.
Brown stated that the problem appears to revolve around fully guaranteed money, specifically concerning scenarios where he might violate league or team regulations, such as involvement in criminal activity. He added that in their extensive history, such an event has never occurred, and this is the sole obstacle preventing the contract's completion, which they view as unnecessary. The financial terms are not in contention; rather, the disagreement stems from his apparent concern that severe misconduct warranting punishment would jeopardize the full guarantee of his contract.
The Bengals are not out of the woods yet regarding contracts, especially with the ongoing tense situation involving Trey Hendrickson, the NFL's current sack leader. Nevertheless, securing Stewart's contract is a positive move for a team that has been grappling with numerous contract disagreements lately.
During his three years with A&M, Stewart accumulated 65 tackles, including 12 that resulted in a loss of yardage, along with 4.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and two recovered fumbles. Despite his underwhelming performance being a significant concern leading up to the draft, his exceptional athletic abilities secured his position as a first-round selection.
The Bengals are now in a position to properly evaluate their promising young edge defender.
