Local Insurance Agent Reveals Flood Impact and Shares Essential Tips for Homeowners

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Turbulent weather is always a threat in Northeastern Kansas, especially around this time of year.

“So it’s definitely something to start taking into consideration during the March and April months,” said Alijah Starks, the Licensed Sales Producer with Brian Green Allstate Insurance. “That’s when it starts picking up with the big storms, and we’ve seen a couple here already this month.”

These big storms lead to a number of issues, including flooding.

“We definitely do see more flood claims and water-based claims during this season, but it is really those people that are in flood zones and have issues with any sort of drainage around the home and keeping the water away from the home, that are going to be most at risk.”

There are a few things you can do to protect your home and your things.

“You want to make sure that you’re maintaining the property, keeping your drain cleared and giving that water to somewhere else to go besides the basement, and besides the sump pump and risking any sort of failure with that.”

You might want to take some time to prepare spaces like your basement for the worst weather.

“Getting things up off the floor that are perishable, that can be damaged. Getting any sort of important furniture, family heirlooms, out of the basement during the storm season is going to be a good idea.”

You might benefit from flood insurance during this rainy season. If you are interested, you can find a list of providers in Kansas on Floodsmart.gov .
