Hackers Strike Australia's Largest Super Fund: Member Accounts Drained

  • AustralianSuper hit by cybersecurity breach

Cyber attackers have struck Australia’s largest superannuation fund, preventing members from accessing their accounts and causing some financial losses.

AustralianSuper has acknowledged a breach in its security, with the fund’s Chief Member Officer, Rose Kerlin, urging members to review their accounts.

'We are highlighting this event to make sure members are alert and take all possible precautions to protect their retirement savings,' she said.

'If their information is accurate, members aren’t required to contact us.'

On Friday afternoon, AustralianSuper members encountered difficulty logging into their accounts, receiving a red warning message instead.

"We apologize, but our service is presently unavailable. Please attempt to access it at a later time," it stated.

It is believed that the cyber breach is impacting approximately 8,000 accounts out of AustralianSuper's 3.5 million members, which makes it the largest superfund in Australia.

Ms Kerlin said 600 AustralianSuper passwords had been stolen.

In recent days, we've noticed an increase in unusual activities within our member portal and mobile application. We strongly advise our members to enhance their online security measures," she stated.

'This week we identified that cyber criminals may have used up to 600 members’ stolen passwords to log into their accounts in attempts to commit fraud.

'While we took immediate action to lock these accounts and let those members know, there are things members can do right now to protect themselves online.'

AustralianSuper, an industry superannuation fund, mentioned that they have been collaborating with the Australian Signals Directorate and the National Office of Cyber Security to address the problem.

It strongly advises all members to sign in to their accounts to verify that their banking information and contact details are accurate. Additionally, they should confirm that they have set up a robust password not utilized for any other websites.

AustralianSuper members who have been impacted are advised to contact 1300 300 273.
